Yeah 3 could be any of those things if you think about it, but it might just be thr way the riddle is worded.

4.Guarding levels with a sour disposition
Possibly you are right @Oichi, but for me the mention of 'sour' in the riddle precludes the answer from being anything 'sweet' such as liquorice. Riddles can be tricky, but they should be accurate and not misleading.
