After years of candy crush saga with no problems I cannot now sync my iPad and iPhone to same level. After passing a level it does not automatically put new level on map. Very infuriating.

Which levels are you on your iPad and iPhone? Can you please provide screenshots of game map from both devices?
You said when you play a level, it is not moving you to the next level! Is this happening on the device where you are at the lower level?

After years playing candy crush saga with no problems I now cannot sync my iPad and iPhone to same level and when a pass one level the map doesn’t automatically go to my new level.
