How the hell did anyone pass this level

Hello @Sinead86 and welcome to the community. That is a good question and the answer is: The game let them pass eventually by giving them a lucky board. You need patience and wait until you get a lucky board, such as in this video:
If the game drops you colour bombs then you might have a lucky board, so watch out for that sign. Then take any chance you get to create combos of special candies. If you do get a colour bomb, then try to get a wrapped or striped to go alongside it to create that all powerful combo. Don't waste starting boosters on this. If it takes too long to get that lucky board and if you have lots of gold then it might be worth paying the 10 gold to get past it. But eventually the game will let you pass.
