Are there any other fans of Samantha the Frog left in the game now?
It won't surprise some of you that I'm starting this thread.
I stumbled upon this thread and it inspired me to look up some of those frog levels and see how they play.
It's less than a year since this great competition. I've been taking note of some levels players used for this and found that the frog does still feature in almost all of those levels, which is great, but I remain suspicious. The frog is now introduced very late in the game and most of the early levels can be passed completely bypassing the frog. Evidence to follow.
The Problem:
New players are now learning to play a different game that does not require strategic thinking. Candy Crush is now all about making a double colour bomb or playing special candy combos to pass levels, and about trying to maintain a win streak. This new set of players will develop a completely different method to play from what us frog lovers used to play, and they won't encounter the frog until level 6532, that's pretty late on in the game! Anyone new with a thinking hat will have left the game by then, Candy Crush in 2025 is not designed for that group of people any more. They'll be bored out of their wits by level 3000.
Most players reading this header will probably be wondering the hell I'm on about.
@BossKing and @Nobody1 , you are both more recent players advancing rapidly in the game. Do you see the frog as a friend or a hindrance?
I also have noted that King have simplified a lot of the mechanics of many levels in recent months. This now includes new releases beyond level 18,000, which to me look almost of the same nature as levels in the 1000-4000 range, with few interesting elements. Conveyor belts, chocolate and the frog very rarely feature in the latest releases, and complexity is reduced. Whilst I was initially suspicious that the simplified algorithms might be all part of a bigger plan I now think it's probably because of computing issues. The constant to and fro of our games to King's servers and huge nature of the game with so many levels is probably no longer allowing for the more complex levels with lots of interesting elements to be rolled out. The game is heading into a different direction in 2025, but probably out of necessity rather than some kind of conspiracy to drive out top of the game players, I would guess. King had to do something to stop the game crashing all the time. The conveyor belts, chocolate and frog do all still appear in some levels, but in the recently rewritten ranges 1-3000 and, apparently now beyond level 18,000, we don't see much of any of these more complex elements any more. My best theory right now would be that this is to free up space for more live leaderboard competitions and "bragging rights" features like the new Candy Unwrapped that require a lot of interaction.
End of boring theorising.
Here are some of the earlier frog levels. I was wondering why players no longer come here to post about level 6532. The same goes for quite a few levels that we used to get lots of questions about. Some have been changed but most still exist, so why do players not come to the community any more? I think the reason may be that the game allows players to pass these unmarked levels by using their preferred method: win streak and starting boosters, double colour bomb or special candy combos. I tried a few frog levels out not using the frog at all and managed to pass many of these within a few attempts with no boosters. Who would know what the added combination of win streak and timed starting boosters might have on these levels?
Bingo! That's why we don't hear from anyone about this one any more @MannyFae
Along comes the next frog level:
This one is easily passed using no frog, because a wrap/stripe combo will hit those frostings at the bottom. The game gives us plenty of those!
The next two frog levels are also easy to pass without using the frog:
With the frog order removed from the game entirely, it is likely that any new players would use their usual methods to pass frog levels and never learn how to use the frog and indeed see it as a hindrance rather than a help. So there will not be any new frog lovers coming to the game now. We are a dying breed!
Does anyone here know which is the first frog level that does actually require its use? Level 15,003 has boosters locked and apparently does need us to move the frog to pass, it looks a bit like a tutorial:
but I am not sure which level is the first.
The next potential candidate of a level actually requiring the frog is this one:
Starting boosters are locked! A second colour bomb won't drop from the dispensers, so no double colour bomb to be had here any easy way. However for those players who want to keep their win streak the game offers this special treat for me on my first attempt:
No need to pay for extra moves though. On attempt no.7 I pass just by following all the recommended moves, one by one until I get this:
Of course the orange candies went for the bubble gum on this combo and I passed straight away.
That will be all for now as the day beckons and there are visitors coming for the weekend.
Some more boring theorising ๐
Levels we used to get a lot of questions about were mostly frog order levels, so it's no wonder we no longer hear about them. The existence of levels that have the frog but don't require it using it win is not necessarily bad. Furthermore, I think it's the right way to introduce the frog, so that players can try it out and see what it can do before encountering really challenging levels where the frog is essential to passing. What intrigues me the most is the utmost haste at which this was done. Someone has decided that frog orders must be removed, and it was done literally overnight. Some levels were made impossible without a double color bomb combo, while others were made too easy. This could indeed be related to the introduction of Super Color Bomb and the general idea of using boosters to keep a win streak at all costs, which is probably where the game is heading. On the other hand, many levels that can be irreparably ruined by using a double color bomb combo or strong boosters still exist. 6381 is one example where they replaced the chocolate spawned by the mixers with frosting, but otherwise left the level unchanged. So I tend to thing that the reason was because the frog orders were too confusing for many players, who were struggling to figure out how to 'kill' the frog. I would probably agree that something has to be done about that, and even that these levels need to be reworked, if it weren't for the damaging carelessness with which it all was done.
I'm beginning to doubt if King has any bigger plans at all. In 2022, just when I started playing, they stopped making levels with bombs. Rumor had it that they were going to replace them with Countdown Crystals, which were soon tested. Now it's 2025, higher levels still don't have bombs, but some middle range levels still do. Countdown Crystals haven't been introduced, and the whole issue seems to be stuck in limbo. It could take a long time to see what plans King has for the frog, if they have any, that is.
Regarding the computing/server issues that King might have, they are probably real. But I don't think replacing level mechanics is related to them, because all level mechanics must be handled locally by the app. Otherwise, the levels wouldn't be playable offline, and they are.
My post with more boring theorising went for approval ๐
It's appeared now thank goodness and not boring for me at all! Thanks for that!
I personally miss the frog orders. They were there during the first half of last year, so I got to do them, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Even they are easier with double color bombs, etc., but they do require more thought when they're an actual order that must be filled.
And I also like the chocolate levels. The adrenaline is always pumping when I know I might kill the chocolate too early, and that's fun. Disappointing in those cases where I lose my win streak, but still fun. And usually with careful play I can avoid losing the win streak.
My method of play can still require quite a bit of thinking to make it most efficient. That's what I think makes it still fun, and why I still play. It's fun to see how little in the way of extra boosters I can use, so I can keep going longer without watching ads.
Thank you for those thoughts. On the matter of chocolate I am not sure that since the recent rewrites I know of a single level that requires us to actually let chocolate grow, I mean where there is a risk that we could destroy it too soon. There are still some levels where we could destroy a magic mixer too soon but I am not sure there are any levels now where we might induce an "oops" because we destroyed all the chocolate. I agree that those were some of the better levels but I think King have done away with those now. The only chocolate ones seem to be either levels where it functions as a blocker to be destroyed as soon as possible or if there is an order it's lucky candies which will drop continuously and turn into chocolate with no risk of any oops.
