My guess would be it's one of the following:
Opening the game simultaneously on two devices (easy to do by mistake if you play on more than one device)
Changing the clock/timer of your phone
milking one single level in a way that you make more purple candies than the algorithm thinks is possible via normal play
travelling to a non participating country or using a VPN
a glitch or computing error
Whatever reason, King have covered it in their Terms and Conditions, so any player who loses the event for any reason will not be able to get it back.
