Why is the level ending when they clearly were not finished matching candies?

Look closer at the image. Take note just slightly behind and below the banner. There are 4 ORANGE CANDIES MATCHING, but the game is ending for some reason. Not only that but one of those jellies is behind that match of 4 and would have been collected.
My theory is that the code to the game is an absolute mess and isn't taking certain events into account. The game clearly needs its code analyzed and better organized.
I have had levels where I had to paid 10 gold, and upon doing so, the last cherry fell through several portals and was collected... without even making a move because the game somehow considered the cherry sitting on a portal was "settled", instead of letting it pass through.
