I hate to break it to you, but the further you get into the game, the more it becomes Pay 2 Play. You will be stuck for weeks on the same level, waiting for the "lucky board" that never comes.
You will need to decide how much time and money you want to invest. The further in you get, the more you will have to invest. Don't listen to the King/Activision shills in here. Listen to the players who are experiencing the frustration. It can be a fun game for sure (used to be a lot more fun and engaging), but if you don't want to be stuck on the same boring level over and over again, you will have to pay to pass it. Didn't used to be this bad, but here we are.
You should try out some other "match 3" type games out there. I deleted CC and have really been enjoying Toon Blast. They have found the perfect balance between being reasonably able to pass levels, with plenty of opportunities to get free boosters, but having cost-effective bundles you can buy to speed things up. But you are never really an the same level for very long. CC and CC Soda are the only games I've played where you get absolutely stuck for weeks on one level.
So, if you like CC, plan on spending money to advance.
