I started this test game about six months ago. My aim was to test out just how far the game would let me progress before I would run out of gold. I must say, this has taken me utterly by surprise. I thought now with timed only boosters and legendary levels I'd grind to a halt long before now.
This is not what I was expecting to find!
But here's the verdict: It is indeed possible to play Candy Crush and enjoy the game, without adverts and without spending any money. The events really do give us just enough boosters and gold to keep us going to reach this jolly milestone.

I am really thinking of giving er another shot with the start of the Spring Season (if the Bee would fess up on when) being much less aggressive in booster usage and level skipping, ie enhance my calm haha.

I play on mobile and the events I get are all the ones every player gets: Episode race, Sam's Streak, Candy Royale, Season Pass, the collection events that come once a week. The game practically tells you when it wants you to use a lollipop to keep your win streak. If you go with it, you'll succeed.
Don't fight the game, go with it.
You can win every episode race. That is how I got this far. The episode race is definitely the key to succeeding. It earns you gold. Gold can buy you boosters. And if you play boosters you tend to get a lucky board. That sort of sums it up! Good luck!

Win app actually does not get season pass or the weekly race and a few others. Not super sure why but I have only ever seen it for mobile. Also being on your desktop no ads.
The plus is that the game is actually much larger. Something you can only get for mobile with an emulator.
Ya, knowing that there is an "end" to the torture and that those levels are just miserable no matter what does give me a better idea of where I want to be before the late 2000s.
Ya my streak was over 200 when I burned out, I just spent too much gold :D
Also what is the Hub thing I see, Curious about that one. Is it like the Gold Bot? ie spend x gold and get about 10% back.

Of course I spent gold @karasuno ! That is how the game works and how I play it. Candy Crush Gold is not real money....When I claimed I had not spent anything of course I meant that I did not buy anything with real money.
I won most of my episode races. In fact by level 5000 there would have been 330 episode races. I did lose my win streak once or twice, so the 176 win streak is not my total winnings. I won almost all of the 330. So I reckon I must have earned about 15,000 gold given there were also Candy Royale and gold rush events. I spent a lot of gold on buying boosters. The game is meant to be played using boosters, but to stay in a positive gold balance you have to spend them wisely because King don't give us enough chances to get free boosters. I do always try to take advantage of the occasions they give us free timed boosters. Half an hour's worth of timed colour bombs plus wrapped/striped will last me almost an entire episode (so earn 45 gold) and is often enough to pass every level easily. Some levels I chose to pay the 10 gold for extra moves instead. If I do this twice per episode I still make a profit. However, in fact I am making a loss in this game now and doubt I will get to level 10,000. I had 3000 gold at one point and am now down to 1200 gold.
