It's complicated because Australia, as it exists today, became a penal colony in 1788, and although the British colonizers pretended it was devoid of human life (terra nullius), the First Peoples of Australia have been here for over 60,000 years. Their lands, waterways, and air have never been ceded and that is why people say: 'always was, always will be Aboriginal land', to acknowledge our First Peoples and pay our respects to traditional custodians and our Elders past and present. About 250 Nations make up the continent of Australia, so I am including a map, as well as the 3 official flags of Australia.
