i am currently at level 5440 and was wondering why my weekly contest felt different and on checking the other players' progress they are all at the 150-250 level range.

Hello @Rotich22 as Alienscar pointed out I have created a thread over in Discussions on this subject and it would be great if you could join us there and add to all the information we have gathered and exchanged. I wonder if you could confirm how many levels you yourself had passed in the past seven days. I believe that King always match up with others who have played a few more levels than us, to make the event "challenging". So if your opponents have all passed between 150 and 300 levels my guess would be that you perhaps had passed about 150 levels yourself?
my level is 5440 and theirs are(231,281,214,162,197,199 and 161) and for most of them it literally is the levels they have played in the past 7 days
Hello @Rotich22 I can't tell you why this is happening but I can tell you that it is the result of a change made by King four to five weeks ago.
