My ultimate test: purple candy collection

So here I go again:

The ultimate test to help finalise a strategy to win purple candy collection events.

The Lantern event qualifier rounds lends itself beautifully. In fact I'm lucky to not get sidetracked by my Cornflower game on this, as it did not receive this event. So I can test out who is at an advantage using Poppy which is at the end of the map, and a new account. This way I can do some controlled runs.

This is what I set out to find out:

How do the super colour bomb and win streak boosters affect the purple candy score? (i.e. is it worth keeping your win streak for these events?)
How many purple candies do different episodes yield? (i.e. are certain level ranges at an advantage?)
How can I personally maximise my strategy in the earlier rounds to save gold/boosters so that I don't run out in the finals rounds?
How many levels and how much gold will I need to complete the event?

Questions 3 and 4 are personal and will only be of interest if Cornflower is included in All Stars and if I don't happen to be on holiday again like I was last year. (Family always comes first)

Questions 1 and 2 should be of interest to any player wishing to participate in a purple candy collection event.

I have already found out a number of other things about the algorithms that I wasn't even looking for. This is always the way with my tests. I'll mention this in other threads.

I'd like to make an addition to my purple collection tests:

Speed crushing it: Is it worth it?

I'm not sure but I gave it a test today as I had purple candies to collect for the chocolate box and also had the super colour bomb active and indefinite party poppers from the daily win, so it was tempting to try this out.

Episode 906 - 920

Time taken: 12 minutes (that's definitely the fastest I've ever managed. I used the super colour bombs and then a party popper and finished off as fast as I could)

Score (with my own 30x multiplier factored in): 42,660 for the episode. That would in theory give me an hourly score of 213,300.

Is it worth it? I doubt it. Apart from needing lots of party poppers it's quite tiring. I'm not likely to be able to play at this speed for 24 hours flat, that's for sure and I doubt it would score more than my best method of drawing out a level, for which I can score between 160,000 - 180,000 per hour, depending on the level range, and watch some TV at the same time.

It's not all about speed any more, which is good. It means the strategists among us would probably stand a chance against the wild and wasteful crushers.

Congratulations, I don't know how you did that @MannyFae ! I did think about competing in two games myself and at one point was in the lead in all three leaderboards, but I soon gave up and concentrated just on the one game. That's very impressive crushing! Now you've got me curious about the frog level and the other one. I might take a scroll back and look at some of those levels. Enjoy your party poppers!

Thanks for the very interesting info about the Star Tournament. Great to know that it's not just suitable for leaderboards but quite good for them.

I made it as well.

The strategy in both games was to keep the Super Color Bomb. Interestingly, the main game averaged 71,7k per episode, which is surprisingly high for the 15k range. So maybe the Super Color Bomb does affect the scores after all.

There were six frog levels in the nine episodes that I played in the finals, with the majority being easy puzzle type, but there was a very tricky Legendary level with the frog that I completely messed up. Also, there was a level suitable for playing until the last move, which I did.

Actually it seems a bit odd that no matter when they start the winning scores are so similar. Has anyone else got a final leaderboard to share?

Yes, Poppy made it with the Star Tournament. And you know what: It was fun. Some of the levels repeat, but even until right at the end I came across new ones I had not encountered before. Some different frog levels, even one which caught me out with a chocolate order lock and I had failed to count the chocolate before destroying it.

I had two competitors ahead of me when I got up at 6.30 this morning. No alarm set, it wasn't that important to me, but I woke up anyway, checked and tried to catch up. I was a almost two hundred thousand behind but playing faster than the person in front of me and the leader had stopped playing. I had enough time to catch up.

These are all pretty similar final scores, even though the starting times were all different. The bottom leaderboard started a few hours into the event, the Piggy one about 12 hours into the event and the Poppy one with 22 hours left on the clock, so more than halfway into the finals.

@cookiemae For me it works for the chocolate box as I choose the UFO option for the last chocolate. I do use UFOs to pass the levels, so that works for me. It also counts toward "Don't feed the Troll" as I found out today to my delight! I did not realise that. Top That worked as well a few weeks ago, though I have not seen this event since. Thanks for recommending it in the first place. I always discounted it as being any use for anything until you told me about it.

@christinewupp I see you found a good use for the star tournament and found the pattern. I always have played it for the small amount of boosters and yes it would be good for the events I don't have. My only issue is it doesn't record it as new levels. I think because the levels repeat. Most colors for me are easily farmed in the tournament but are of no use because I don't get events.I wish I could use it for the chocolate box it's the only way to get gold in case I need it.

Poppy started with about 22 hours of the competition left. It did not take long for the leaderboard to fill up, nor for me to take the lead. The Star Tournament is THE way to score purple candies. As much as the level ranges of 17,000-18,500 are bad for scoring, the moment you get to the Star Tournament it all changes: Most levels have just 4 or 5 colours, most have cascades if you play a strategic party popper or UFO at the right moment. Many are predictable and easy to see through, besides they circulate, so the more you play this event the more you will know how to beat each level, and which ones to skip. I played for 90 minutes and this is my score:

I played at a leisurely pace here. I am not sure which levels King pick and if they still exist in the real game. Here is one with the chocolate glitch, which makes me wonder if these are now removed former legendary levels.

I also found this nice frog level, which could still be used to make the level last to the final move :

Clearly King don't care to remove such levels out of the event, so there will be players trying to take advantage of levels like the above. I fear King's way to deal with it is to stop any accounts with too much gold, or a really good track record, from participating in the big leaderboard events. Normally I would advise anyone with lots of gold and near the end of the game to try get to the Star Tournament before All Stars @MannyFae and @Nobody1 because from what I have seen today it's definitely possible to win using it if you have enough gold to pay for the right boosters at the right time and/or the extra moves necessary. Unfortunately Poppy does not have enough gold to do it the honest way and my Cornflower game with 20,000 gold is too far back to get here in time. Besides, they'll probably throw us all out of the tournaments like cookiemae, because we are too good at it.

With 33 hours to go I'm in the lead on both leaderboards that I started today. I very much like the green "playing now" that shows us who is actively playing. It helps to judge if I am overtaking players because I am faster or if it is because they have paused playing. It looks like I am a faster scorer than the others in my two groups, which is what I was hoping to find out. I'm not going to deplete my gold bars for this tournament any more though, it's not fun to play. They've made the levels unpleasantly hard, in the level ranges 300- 600 at least. Boring as well. I could swear I'm playing some of the same levels again and again, they are all so similar.

Thanks. I don't think I'll win with this one as I don't even have time to play right now. I'll start another one tonight and one quite late, maybe tomorrow evening. Who knows how many finals leaderboards there will be for this competition. I expect there to be an unlimited number as all they give away is a few party poppers.

The new player starts now

Currently at level 238.

I have an addition to make:

New player started the game early this week and played a few levels up to level 66. Then the second chance round came along. I started playing yesterday evening with 16 hour left on the clock. It was surprisingly easy to get to the top of the leaderboard and stay there.

There were 50 players on this leaderboard and only one (!) was from India, three in total from Asia. Mostly Europe and America, a few from Africa, a much more expected mix of players than the qualifiers.

I calculated my score for each episode from level 126 through to level 230. Each one of these episodes only scored between 45,000 and 50,000 purple. I was quite surprised since a lot of these levels were four colour boards with what seemed a lot of purple. But they do self terminate, it's hard to play them to the last move, and the red candies now start dropping as soon as the level is won.

Anyone who thinks that players at low levels are at an advantage need to also note that a player at these levels will have no friends and so will run out of lives and might have to buy indefinite lives to compete. I had to spend some gold bars for extra moves before I hit the first legendary an hour before the round finished as I was down to my last life. That definitely makes it harder for new players. It's not just about how easy the levels themselves are. And they score less purple per level than the higher levels.

I started one game yesterday morning with 26 hours left on the clock, and the other yesterday evening with about 15 hours left. Both groups were very similar and I needed almost the same score (281k and 267k) to win. The majority of players in both groups were Asian players, and someone attempted to catch up with me during the night in both groups, but they were unsuccessful. The qualifying score was lower in the group that started very late (103k vs. 146k).

Made one final test of the knockout rounds this morning: Levels 561 to 575. Scored 65,298 purple in that episode. I have noted that across the board on all levels I play the red candies now drop as soon as I pass, so the end of level cascade is shortened. This might play into the hands of experienced players who understand how to play an obvious "win" level to the last move, so I'm not sure it adds fairness to the game. But that may not be the purpose.

I rather suspect that King are running their own tests during this competition to do exactly what I have done: calculate the possible maximum score for each level. They should easily be able to weed out suspicious players who score more than what they know is possible.

The qualifying scores for the final were: 160,000 in the groups starting Tuesday evening, and 300,000 in the group that started a few hours into the competition. These are the qualifiers for the final in my two groups:

Pakistan level 2271

Indonesia level 1312

USA level 1509

USA level 13,941

(Piggy UK level 575)

Brazil level 4577

Brazil level 883

Mexico level 2460

India level 891

(Poppy UK level 18,380)

There is a lack of mid range players, which may be due to those players being excluded. My own game at level 5000+ did not see this event.

I started a new test game (with sweet old early levels!) which has got the invite to join the second chance round. So there's more testing to come.

Playing the 45 new releases and counting my purple score:

The score per episode is in the usual range: 55,000 - 69,000 purple. BUT I struggled to reach an adequate hourly score. These levels are just too long, too many colours, too many sour skulls etc. You can't just go in with a party popper or double colour bombs on these levels because most of the board does not unlock until much later. I only managed 115,000 per hour.
