How to make the most of the new jelly fish (2025)

Love them or hate them, those new jelly fish are here to stay. I have tried to study their behaviour to see which levels they are a help and which ones they are no help at all.

Firstly some general points:

These fishes behave differently from what the old fishes used to do. We have to relearn the mechanics and change our strategy accordingly. The use of the new fishes is now part of each level design.

Because of the above the videos posted on YouTube are not much help any more.

The best help at the moment we can get on how to use the new fishes is to turn on hints in the game and follow the suggested moves for levels we are stuck on. Right now, (March 2025 ) the game designers want players to get used to the new fishes and will help by suggesting the best possible moves in most levels to incorporate the fish. Many move suggestions now are to create a fish. This may change in the future, but I have found that at the moment the game hints will help.

Making a combo with the fish:

Fish+ colour bomb is a great combo, especially on jelly levels.

Fish+wrap or fish+stripe no longer works, so don't make such combos.

Fish+Fish is good for some levels as it will create 3 fish, so it is good near the end of a jelly level

I have repeatedly tried this and have found that in all instances the new fish do reliably clear the last jelly on the board. Other blockers may however not get cleared as a last move, and fish+wrap or stripe also may not work.

One warning: The new fish will NOT attack any other fish. So there will be no fish eats fish cascades, and even if the last jelly or last candy underneath a dragon is a fish no fish will go for it, so you will need to use other means to clear those spaces

Now to the order of priority. This is work in progress but it is important for all players to know how the jelly fish work.

    1. Dragon levels

Their biggest priority seems to be to clear blockers directly underneath dragons on dragon levels. On single order dragon levels the fish will reliably go for any candy that lies between the dragon and its exit, even if it is toffee such as in this level:

This next example shows the dragon is one liquorice away from its exit. Making a match to set off the fish will definitely hit that liquorice, in preference to any other jelly or blocker on the board.

However, on multiple order levels like this one the game may want us to use combos such as double wrap to save the dragons and use fish to clear the jelly. I have noted that in such a case the fish may NOT go for a candy directly underneath the dragon. So even this is not a 100% reliable rule. If there is a better move to save a dragon then use that and use the fish to clear the jelly.

In instances like this one below, the fish will only clear one candy underneath the dragon, even if several fish get activated during the same move. So if you hit the double fish combo one will clear below the dragon, the other two will clear jelly elsewhere:

Fish will only clear underneath dragons if the blockers or candies lie directly underneath the dragon, not in a zigzag pattern or via portals as shown in this level:

For this level the fish only attack the jellies and are of no use. To pass this level you still require the old strategy to create wrap/stripe combos and double colour bombs.

If there are portals in the way of the dragons the fish will not help clear the way to their exits. So again you will need to use the old methods using combos of special candies on such levels. Such as for this level:

This is an example of a dragon level for which the new fish are of no use whatsoever:

The fish on this level are not intelligent but are stupid: They target candies directly underneath the dragon, apparently not knowing that there is a candy cane and portals. Do NOT use fish for levels like this one. Use the usual method with combos of special candies.

    Top Priority: Sour skulls

Many of you won't even have come across this nasty blocker yet. But if you have, then you will undoubetedly hate it as much as I do, so this is really good news: The new jelly fish attack these as their top priority. Even in the level pictured below, where there are double and triple blockers underneath dragons the fish will go for the sour skull and that is definitely helpful!

    Inconvenient priority: Lucky candy

The new jelly fish seem to have been programmed to go for lucky candy over just about everything else. This can be a problem on some levels and I would not use the lucky candy booster because of this. Example:

This level has a frosting and liquorice shell order. Normally fish would go for the liquorice shell but if there is a lucky candy on the board as seen below the fish will go for the lucky candy instead, which will hamper your game. Breaking the liquorice shells would be much more useful than creating more of them from lucky candies. I cannot think of a lot of levels where fish breaking lucky candies would be of much help. Placing lucky candy so high on the priority list is not good.

Gumball machines : sidetrack the fish and render them useless

On levels that have multiple blockers I have found the fishes will first go for gumball machines if present. This takes priority over frosting, caged keys, keys under marmalade, jelly, anything really. Such as in the level below any fish will target the gumball machines here until those are gone. So fishes are not much use in the presence of gumball machines. The singular fish in the level pictured below will NOT go for jelly or the jelly jars: It will attack the gumball machines instead. What a waste!

Candy Cake: the fish's favourite food

On levels with multiple candy cakes the new jelly fish are superior to their older counterparts. They will always reliably target cake slices over any other blocker and often such levels are over far too soon and I find them too easy to beat since the new fishes were introduced. Using the pre level fish booster on such a level is very effective. The fish will eat the cake slices and the exploding cakes will clear the blockers.

Fish will clear this level for us and the challenge is gone. Boring.

    Magic mixers and liquorice shells

These are a bit of a mixed bunch and I haven't quite worked them out yet. Generally the new fish will go for these. Some levels they attack a mixer in preference to liquorice shells, on others they prefer the liquorice shells. Usually they target these as a priority, but not always. Certainly the fish will help and again, with the liquorice shells especially, they can be so effective that it renders levels that used to be tough to crack very easy to pass. Example:

The game here hints to me to match the four blue candies to create a fish as my first move. On this level the first fish attacks the magic mixer, which explodes soon and subsequently fish attach the two liquorice shells at the sides. We used to need to hit those with striped candies in the past but now if we are "lucky" the fish will clear the board with ease:

    Multiple layers of various blockers:

Frosting, rainbow twist, sugar coats, marmalade, liquorice, cages etc etc and of course jelly.

The new fish will attack all of these after the priority targets I mentioned above have been hit. They tend to go for multiple stacks first, but may also go for the weakest link in a rainbow twist. I think what they attack depends on how the board was programmed. If we are meant to pass the fish are more helpful than if the level is programmed to fail. There probably is a priority of order here, but I have not figured it out yet, and I'm not sure it is hugely relevant. The fish will attack any candy that covers jelly, but as they only clear one layer for multiple layers of blockers fish will never play a big part in clearing the level.

And right at the bottom: Fish hate Toffee Swirls !

They won't go anywhere near toffee, so don't even try!

If the toffee is on top of jelly or if it's blocking the way underneath a dragon, that's a different matter of course (see above) , but on a level like this one with a toffee order and nothing else, the fish have absolutely no effect at all. Once you get to the stage where toffee is the only blocker left the fishes will swim off and attack just any random candy at this point and never touch the toffee.

    Level 1

They're worthless! 2 moves to release 1 fish? What a flipping joke! Here to stay? If they don't fix this cluster!!!! I'm not staying!

As I tried to explain they are of use in sour skull, candy cake, dragon, magic mixer and liquorice shell levels. The old fish never even featured in those levels unless there happened to also be jelly. I do agree that for general jelly levels the new fish are not as helpful as the old fish were.

We need to relearn the mechanics. That is what my post is all about.

Hey! Would you like to give us your opinion?
