New fish behaviour? (September 2025)

Promptly with the start of September and in Candy Cup week I cannot but note that there are a lot of changes to our games involving the jelly fish. I have noted this in at least two of my games.

There are a lot of jelly fish, many more than before. They just come out of nowhere
The jelly fish behaviour is less reliable and sometimes destructive to our strategy as opposed to helpful
The general algorithms seem different (for those of us who know these older levels well). Jelly fish often determine the outcome in the last few moves. I am seeing many "one jelly short" boards, or boards for which a jelly fish combo is the final winning move.

Are other players seeing these changes?

Is everyone seeing these changes?

How about players at the top of the map @Nobody1 @teenybee ? Are you seeing more jelly fish than usual in the latest levels as well?

The fishes are reversed stupid. The harder a level is, the fishes are equally stupid. Legendary levels - Totally brain dead. Targeting every good thing you have and completely ignoring the most obvious things you target.
Must be an intentional programming to help you spend your resources.

Thanks for the information. I've noticed exactly the same on a level as you describe: the fish hit the hidden dragon instead of the skulls. I think this must be an error in the coding.

I find that the fishes are generally completely useless early on in any level now. Any move creating or using a fish in the early part of the game is a wasted move and I would not recommend it. However, most levels have a final few moves written into the algorithms in which the fish help us pass the level, even many of the older levels. So my judgement is that they are only useful in the last five moves of a level. Often though they will leave players just short, so that we have to pay for extra moves or replay.

I wasn’t looking out for fish in the first new episode and yet halfway through it I realised I was seeing them in almost every level. I never deliberately create them but maybe I was doing it unwittingly. There weren’t so many in the next two episodes but there was at least one level where all the dispensers dropped only fish. They are definitely random in where they hit and often pretty dim. For instance - and this is something I’ve noticed on one of the ‘new’ Star Tournament levels too - if there’s a covered-up dragon that can only be freed by repeatedly hitting skulls, the fish ignore the skulls and keep hitting the dragon.

And yes, I have noticed the hints always suggest making a fish combination even when it’s obviously not the best move. I haven’t turned them off but I’ve started to ignore them on the many fish levels.

It is so weird. What is the incentive to worry about keeping a streak? I mean I get that once you have it you sorta want to keep it, so they make the top bag worse to make it harder to keep = money, but that has limits. Once you realize 1-2-3 are great, losing a streak means nothing for most players.

The lowest tier bag is actually the best one. Yet they keep pestering me with offers to get my streak back to 6th tier. Thankfully, the 'Not Now' button is still available.

They want to make the win streak keepers suffer, I think.

I honestly hadn't noticed a significant increase in fish in the latest levels, but it's possible that's just because I'm not noticing them. Back when the big fish change happened half a year ago or so, it did seem like they were more common, so probably I just am not noticing any additional increase. It is true I'm getting them in my candy necklace, so probably that is an increase that is real, and I just didn't notice. Shows how boring the levels are becoming.

Now this is a hoot. So I just replayed the level using only starting boosters. Playing my usual strategy. And I got this:

which passed the level, of course!

This goes to prove my theory that there are two types of board algorithms out there at the moment: the new fish based one, and the old luck-if-you-play-the-right-moves one. I know which one I prefer!

On to finish the episode now.

Now that is just a typical outcome if you use the jelly fish. Who is so stupid that they fall for this?

I'll replay, thank you, and see what I get with no double colour bomb and no boosters.

But clearly the game only gives us those for jelly levels.

So they took away a stripe from my Candy Necklace and replaced it with fish that they only give me sometimes 😡 The 6th tier goodie bag is literally the worst of them all.

I just got another three, and I didn't play the fish booster. I think I get three fishes on my candy necklace! But clearly the game only gives us those for jelly levels. I thought the "3" was something else, but apparently it's fish. Who needs all this clogging up their opening board?

Ah!!! Now that explains the mechanism of how those four fish got there, well two of them anyway. How annoying! I hate those stupid things. So is this new this week? I never noticed it before, but you're right: I've got them in my necklace.

Another good argument for letting go of our win streaks.

The episode I'm playing at the moment seems to have been nerfed to be fish heavy.

I mean, I know I played the fish booster, but do I really want this many fish on my opening board?

I certainly do not, as this is a frog level! I started with the wrap+stripe combo to see what would come out of that, it charged the frog up and I passed using my best frog moves, avoiding the fish. This one still have lots of fun cascades as well.

The same level with no win streak nor starting boosters has no fish at all:
