What's wrong with the jelly fish?

I'm currently stuck on level 2,346: collect 15 yellow candies in 19 moves. There's a magic mixer near the bottom of the level. The only problem is that on my first three tries, the jelly fish always avoided the magic mixer. On my fourth try, the jelly fish went straight for the magic mixer 100% of the time for all 5 hits. On my fifth try, the jelly fish went for the magic mixer about 50% of the time. On my sixth try, the jelly fish completely avoided it. Normally, the jelly fish always go for magic mixers here. This nonsense forced me to lose a Candy Royale at the very beginning.

Could someone from King please explain what's been going on with the jelly fish lately? This is not at all how they used to behave.

I agree. Most players found the priority-based fish to be too complicated, but they have been replaced by a simpler and more intuitive concept. And it's what many asked for: fish should do something that is useful on a particular level, so I guess most players will like them.

On the upside this must mean that old fashioned mechanisms have to return to passing the more complex levels and that they must dig up the old algorithms for the mid section of levels that have sour skulls, candy cakes and magic mixers if the fish now don't target these specifically any more.

This is very helpful, as always. It seems to indicate that basically the new fish mechanism has been simplified. At least I now understand why they keep tinkering with the game. Every time they change anything it's something to make the game simpler to compute and more streamlined across the entire range.

On the upside this must mean that old fashioned mechanisms have to return to passing the more complex levels and that they must dig up the old algorithms for the mid section of levels that have sour skulls, candy cakes and magic mixers if the fish now don't target these specifically any more. I think you already commented on noting this.

I have just started a new game and it does have these fish in it already. I guess they will get rolled out across the board before long now.

What fish target seems to be heavily influenced by the level type.

On order levels, they give priority to the orders.

On dragon levels (dragon only), fish attack spaces underneath the dragons, but not necessarily immediately underneath them, it could be, say, two spaces underneath. A fish + vertical stripe could strike above the dragon, and a fish + wrap could strike in order to drop out two dragons at the same time. On mixed dragon levels, dragons don't seem to be a priority.

On rainbow rapid levels, fish attack anything that immediately blocks the rainbow streams, even if it's the magic mixers.

On jelly levels, fish seem to target random squares that have jelly. They don't prioritize double jelly or jelly + blocker, and are now only good for getting the last few jellies. So on jelly levels, we are back to how it was before the introduction of fish, except that we now get one fish instead of three.

Wow 😲 How could Christine describe the fish in testing so clearly? I don't know how to use these adjectives. If I want to describe the difference between the new fish and the fish now in testing, I would say one swims very fast and one swims slowly😔

I think these fish need sorting out. They are clearly not suited to the upper levels. I quite liked them in the pre level 200 game, but that is obviously because they have been programmed with simple instructions suited to those levels. Come the higher levels they are confused and in this level they attack spaces completely at random:

There are no rules nor a pattern to what space they will attack on this level: a liquorice wrap, a key, a random candy on one jelly, a triple frosting, a single frosting, the striped candy boxes (sorry I've forgotten the name), I've even seen one attack one of the locked up spaces. I fear the complexity of these levels is too much for the fish. This resembles more a game of Roulette than Candy Crush.

It does give that feeling you are describing and I agree with you on that. There has to be some way to predict what the fish will go for but it's probably too early to delve too far into that since these fish are probably not the finished product.

The new fish really radically change the game. I had a terrible time with the last 2 episodes this week - I think partly due to my being bad at using them, and partly because they're not very helpful on levels that are just packed with blockers, which is unfortunately what all the hard new levels are like.

But where I really felt the difference was in the Star Tournament. (Not playing for the tournament itself, since I also have the bug of nothing counting - just playing for the Baker's Box.) In the Star Tournament I am noticing that a number of the levels that were possible now seem impossible (especially the levels with skulls, where fish were the only way to make it through without a ridiculously lucky board), and a number of others that were formerly seemingly impossible are now surprisingly easy. It will take a while to fully adjust.

This must be an unintentional side effect. The developers should read this thread and take note. That used to be the one reliable feature of the jelly fish: hit whatever is sitting below the dragon. I cannot believe this is deliberate. These fish are not ready for general rollout until this gets sorted.

The 'fish won't target another fish' problem is gone, but here's another variant of it: fish won't target that wrap underneath the dragon no matter what.

Fish only seem to target specials when they are required for the orders. What fish target is now heavily influenced by level objectives.

Upon reflection, it's likely that the absence of jelly in that square was the cause.

No way I'm going to play the 'launch a fish and hope it does something useful' way they want me to. I will have to work out a strategy or quit, really this time. On a positive note, on those levels with skulls the whole experience feels more classic: you have to make combos, just like in the good old days!

They helped me pass level 11424. On this level the fish target the toffee above all else. This meant I was able to pass despite setting off both wonderful wrappers at the same time. The wonderful wrappers open to produce double colour bombs combos, so if you set off both at the same time you might fail this level.

The fish act as a fail safe mechanism to aid players who - like me here - messed up:

I guess these new fish are really doing what King is telling them to do, to achieve the outcome the level is meant to have. Fail, pass, near miss, whatever that may be.

These changes and this new unpredictable behaviour sends us a clear message from King: Don't even think about trying to work out a strategy.

Anyway, it's still in its testing phase.

I haven't yet come across a level where fish are targeting magic mixers at all. Sour skulls are severely deprioritized. Fish just keep hitting the frosting like nothing else exists.

My Cornflower account has them too from today. It's odd since the two new accounts I started last week didn't get them. I looks like they are now trialling these fishes for players at higher levels. A punishment maybe?

I also got the new whooshy fish today. It does seem like it will require some relearning. Fortunately I got them on old levels while filling a chocolate box after completing an episode race, so I'm getting some time to learn how they work.

I got those new glowing fish just today. From what I've seen so far, the fish and wrap combo chooses its target spot to ensure that several items that are on the fish target list are caught in the blast. It makes it much harder to predict, a shame because I used this combo strategically a lot. In the position shown below, the wrapped fish targeted the blue striped candy.

I find the new fish animation annoying, as it's not immediately apparent where it's going, and it's much harder to tell where exactly it has hit. In this case, it was hard to tell if it hit the striped candy or the adjacent green one.

A lot to relearn.

I have the new jelly fish (the ones that glow). After thinking about it for a while, I think the jelly fish and special candy combinations try to affect as many board spaces as possible, which means conveniently protecting the magic mixers here instead of damaging them.

Thank you for this great study of the jelly fish behaviour. It's really enlightening. I have one question: Do you have the latest test type jelly fish in your game? Those glow when active and go straight for candies with a determined whoosh rather than swimming in a wriggly line. Their behaviour has been nerfed to now also attack other fish and when they attack a frosting with a jelly underneath they destroy both frosting and jelly together. King are running tests on this new type, but I have deleted my game that saw them and have not had them since.

On the difficulty issue I am currently running some tests to figure out what is going on. I think the labels are now often wrong and the distinction between super hard/nightmarish/legendary is being blurred. I think these labels are no longer being updated by the same method King used for years (which was according to player success) in fact I'm not sure if the labels are being updated at all, but am hoping to find some answers soon.

Update: New fish, new behavior, right? Level 2,554 annotated for convenience…

Even with the massively improved jelly fish behavior, the jelly fish are still just as useless when magic mixers are in the level. If the magic mixers have spawned anything, then combining a jelly fish with a wrapped candy will send the wrapped fish to one of the white boxes. This destroys all of the blockers spawned from a particular magic mixer, but it always ensures that the magic mixer stays out of the blast zone. If there is just one spawned blocker remaining, and it's adjacent to the magic mixer, the wrapped jelly fish will still land in the nearest white box to protect the magic mixer.

There is no reason that wrapped jelly fish should be unable to land one space closer to the magic mixers.

If you combine a jelly fish with a vertical striped candy, then it will try its best to avoid either of the black boxes. That's really bad because those black boxes correspond to the outer edges of the cake bombs, which are very hard to reach with special candies. It's extremely easy to understand why they avoid those spaces, however: a vertical striped candy + jelly fish landing there would hit a magic mixer.

I haven't been able to test what happens when the board is completely devoid of blockers from magic mixers because it's next to impossible to get to a board state like that.

Worse still, it's already ridiculously difficult to bring down one Sprink, let alone three of them. On my 15th try, I finally gave in and spent 10 gold bars on extra moves + UFO booster. Why is this level only rated Super Hard? That's the second lowest hardness rating. Both Legendary levels in this episode were way easier.

The jelly fish are a lot better than they used to be! When magic mixers start spawning blockers, however, the game instantly becomes transparently rigged against the player.

I looked at the previous versions of this level, which was originally placed at 2,551. It originally had 22 moves, was nerfed to 40 (!!!) moves, and was buffed to 28 and eventually 19 moves. I'm sure I missed a few move counts. Jelly fish weren't an option back then, but they hardly make a difference here anyway.

Having taken on board the priority issue explained by MannyFae I have tried the level 25 times. The issue must be the lack of a lucky board in this level. A lucky board would require the mixer to be destroyed early on in the level, preferably before it spawns its first cage. This did happen to me once, following the suggested moves. However this early luck was then not followed by more luck. This is the problem with Candy Crush since September: There has been an uncoupling between luck early on in the level and luck in the main section and finish. On the one occasion when I had fish destroy the mixer in my first few moves there were no further chances to progress to pass the level. The issue here is the same as throughout the game: Lucky boards have been written out of the game for specific levels. Why they would do this for a level at the beginning of an episode is beyond me. I have encountered the same for two of my accounts today, and quite frankly this means I'm not playing the game.

The first cage usually gets spawned on one of the triple frostings in the bottom line. Once this has happened the fish will go for that cage, so in this level we need an old fashioned lucky board comprising striped or wrapped candies, colour bombs and combos. I have not seen anything remotely resembling that in my 25 attempts. The fish in this level function to get players close enough to make watching adverts or paying for extra moves tempting.

Fish have a very complex list of priorities. On this level, the mixer spawns licorice cages that can cover frosting or lucky candies. Fish, in my game at least, go for the mixer before it generates any more licorice cages. Once there are caged lucky candies or caged frosting on the board, they become a higher priority target than the mixer itself. Caged regular candies are a lower priority than the mixer itself. So what fish target depends on what is currently on the board.

It illustrates perfectly how the jelly fish are King's little helpers and how their function in the game is to produce the preset outcome, which is what I have always suspected but never bothered to test out. Nice work. (I'm sorry but I cannot tag you since I do not have those characters on my keyboard)

In fact your findings also illustrate beautifully how each time we load a board the new board is predetermined to either pass or fail. The AI that has been rewriting the algorithms recently must change the behaviour of the jelly fish to change the outcome according to this. I suspect that the occasions when they fish did attack the magic mixers were "possible to pass" boards and when they did not attack the mixers those were "definite fail" boards, but that would require some more testing.

I have noted this kind of new jelly fish behaviour since the beginning of September 2025.
