I'm stuck on an impossible level, so I did some research. It was interesting.

Welcome to level 6471. You have 22 moves to clear all the licorice swirls, bring down all the Sprinks, and clear 30 color bombs. The color bomb dispensers give only 1 color bomb per move, so you have to make 8 color bombs yourself in the upper and lower portions of the board.

The only problem? This level has 4 colors. You are never making the 8 extra color bombs unless you have extra moves. The only way to win without ads, spending gold bars, or using boosters is to bring in extra moves with the win streak and a bunch of color bombs from the win streak and timed starting boosters.

This level actually used to have only 2 colors! Well, it also had bombs, an extra layer on the sugar coats, and only 20 moves; but at least it was possible:

Out of principle, I wasn't going to submit to King's whims. I wasn't going to bail myself out with the extra moves from ads. Armed with several minutes of infinite lives, I wanted to push the game to see where I could take it.

The first thing I noticed is that the game very slowly inches you toward victory. Every 10 or so attempts, you'll always start the level with an extra move. These extra moves will accumulate, so attempts 31-40 (approximately) will always start you with 3 extra moves. By the time I called it quits for the night, I was starting with 25 moves instead of 22. (I do not know if it goes past 3 extra moves; I stopped sometime in attempts 31-40.)

Second, my infinite lives expired sometime during this research. Having sunk over a dozen attempts into the level, I got this "Bonus Round" offer that was a lot better than the usual. Instead of a life refill (and maybe an extra booster? I forgot), it would have given me 30 minutes of infinite lives, some timed UFO access, and some timed lollipop hammer access.

Out of principle, I failed the level. I wasn't interested in chasing a full completion of the hard version of the Baker's Box when I had already beaten 30 levels tonight. During a few attempts, however, I noticed something peculiar: was the game trying to give me a lucky board every so often? On some attempts, there were almost no purple candies. I think this was the game trying to generate more cascades, but it didn't move the needle at all here. The board was far too cramped for it to matter.

Finally, I maxed out the number of extra moves I could pay for. Yes, it still includes a UFO every other attempt.

Welcome to the +255 Extra Moves club, I guess. And no, those extra moves from the ads would not have sufficed. There weren't any color bombs anywhere. Even with 25 starting moves, I was only able to make 1 color bomb myself. The timed color bomb bumped me up to 27 cleared. Remember: You're expected to make 8 color bombs yourself in 22 moves. You're not getting more than 1 or maybe 2 if you're insanely lucky.

Anyway, I spent the rest of the night completing gold chocolate box tasks. Please excuse me as I bang my head against the wall at having to use 2 party boosters when I already used the timed party boosters from the hard Baker's Box.

EDIT 2: I passed the level with the help of extra moves from ads. The second train gave me 20 minutes of jelly fish, 20 minutes of party popper, and 30 minutes of lollipop hammer. This made the ensuing elite Candy Royale a breeze.

I have been offered an extra 7 or 10 moves occasionally on a first attempt for 10 gold bars.

I had this too, before All Stars I think. Meanwhile, the Wheel still hasn't been removed for some players.

I'll keep my eyes open for this one and see if I can catch it. I've also noted that extra moves offered now vary. I have been offered an extra 7 or 10 moves occasionally on a first attempt for 10 gold bars. This may be an alternative method to the hated wheel which is being trialled.

It appears so. Especially considering the unexpected addition of moves after a certain number of failed attempts.

This level has received a recent moves buff. When I first played 6471, it had 27 moves (I have proof).

Thanks. I made a ridiculous number of attempts on one level myself yesterday and now I'm wondering if I missed any bonus moves being added or if I'm just not part of that test group. By the way, this level still has 27 moves in my game, and the Candy Crush Saga wiki also lists it as having 27 moves, so it might be a recent change or a test version.

The indication is subtle, but you'll notice it if you're looking at the move count. For a split second, you'll see the original move count, but it will then get replaced with the new move count. You'll see it bounce slightly when it happens.

Strictly speaking, it's not mathematically impossible, as there's a technique to collect more than one color bomb per move, but the proposition to do it 8 times in 22 moves is beyond ridiculous. This level SHOULD be replaced, in my opinion, even if it's with those lemon slices. However, I've noticed that the levels being replaced are not the impossible ones, but rather those that are confusing, where extra moves are not particularly helpful since players just can't figure it out. Here, the extra moves obviously help, as does the lucky candy booster. So, my prediction is that the level will remain as it is.

I also came across some levels that became problematic due to either their original mechanism being broken by the change in the game's mechanics or excessive move reduction. It happens on some frog levels as well. It's very noticeable that the game tries to help the player by creating massive cascades and forming color bombs, but it's usually not what is needed to pass. The AI just cannot comprehend the board layout and tries to create a winning scenario using simple methods, mainly by regulating candy drops.

This is new to me. Does the game give any indication when bonus moves are added at the start of a level?

This is very similar to the kind of tests I used to run. I stopped doing these since the AI took over, because I've been finding that research of this kind doesn't really help me understand the algorithms that now underlie Candy Crush.

This is an old level that has undergone so many changes and used to get complained about a lot, usually after some changes were introduced that made the level impossible to pass. This happened when bombs were removed from the game I remember. At that time I think the third and fourth colours were introduced. There are other older levels which are now mathematically impossible. The developers are lazy or non existent (I mean they've been laid off and there is maybe no one real left): They have employed a computer programme to tweak the levels, and this can wreak havoc with some of the older levels which were written by human hand and had a specific strategy to pass.

The game quite definitely does not want players to be stuck on any level forever, so it does try to help. The way it now seems to do this is via events and features. We now get 15 minutes UFO from the booster wheel, for example. The game will give this out to players it wants to aid. Two weeks ago many of us saw 15 minute free lives and 5 minutes UFO each day we logged in, some players still get that now. Most levels in the first half of the game are possible to pass if using a single UFO, usually played 4 or 5 moves from the end, or as your first or second move, depending on the type of level. I wonder if you have tried this on level 6471 and if that would work. After playing the required booster the jelly fish and candies that drop will usually allow players to finish off the level. In the higher levels this requires a party popper instead, some levels you need both. Many levels also require a one off payment for extra moves. There seems to be a separate algorithm for first attempts (based on the fact that on a first attempt players will have win streak boosters, so if these are present the algorithm for that board is different from later attempts), so that players who want to maintain a win streak will have to play X type of booster and/or pay gold for X number of extra moves. That is quite a simple way for the AI to compute, and that is why we now have the jelly fish to help achieve the outcome written into the programme, and the lack of interesting and complex levels. The AI that tweaks the algorithms cannot handle complex thought. So it's looking for simple ways out.

When there are complaints about specific older levels like this one it tries to tweak the moves up or down in order to achieve the desired result. If that doesn't stop the complaints it will replace the old level with a boring orange slice or marshmallow level. You can spot these in the game as you move along past level 6000. Largely players have stopped asking about specific levels now since they have learned that the game is about budgeting gold bars, so people don't expect to pass levels like this one without paying. As the IQ of the average player seems to have plummeted in recent years more players get stuck despite the help thrown at them by the game, because they just don't get it. So the game offers more and more help and tries to make it more obvious to players what to do. The new tapping function, which is almost certainly going to be introduced to all players in the coming months, will again make many of these levels easier to pass for players.

If level 6471 gets too many complaints again then it will get replaced by orange slices. Watch this space….
