Lives given by friends

Why do my lives that friends give to me disappear without me even using them? If I log out or if Candy Crush / Internet Explorer freezes when it comes back all of my lives are gone which doesn't make sense. SMH!!!

This is part of the game design. I'm sure there is a screen in the game that says something like 'messages are only available the first time you play' so if you close the browser or refresh then they will disappear.
