There game team might have changed this feature during this weekend, (only allowing playing ones, this has happened before) but as the event is over now, there is not much we can do now.

I have never had Bubbel Gum Hill. Luckily I have MR: Toffee to get faster with my levels.

This has been happening off and on for a while now, but it seems as if the time period you are locked out is getting longer. If it is not a glitch, then you shouldn’t get a message to retake the throne. If you get the message (which I am) that you can retake the throne, then it should be letting us play.
