Who shows up on the map and in my high scores list?

This will depend on how you are connected.

If you play connected to Facebook, your Facebook friends who play the game will also appear in the high score lists and on the game map. 

If you don't play connected to Facebook then the game will automatically assign you a group of fellow Kingdom players. These players are there to offer help in sending you extra lives, or helping you at roadblocks. It's completely anonymous and you can choose whether to interact with these players or not.  

Some of our games use a blend of Kingdom and Facebook so you may often see a combination of your Facebook friends alongside the randomly generated Kingdom players.
