What are the blue bubbles (with numbers in bottom right corner) in Alpha Betty and how do they work

Three or four blue bubbles appear over a letter that sometimes seem to knock several moves off my overall move count. Why is this happening? How do I stop it from happening?

    You have to use the blue bubbled letters in a word to avoid them compromising your move count. If they get knocked off the board any other way, they'll mess you up. Good luck!
