What does t mean find all the required words

I do not understand the 5x1 9x1 does it mean I need that many tiles or that it adds up to that?

    the quantity is to the right
    5x1 ... you need one 5-letter word
    9x1 ... you need one 9-letter word

    I have issues with this. I can create a 5 letter word for say, 5x1 but it won’t give me credit, then other times I can create a 4 letter word and it will! I tried to figure out if it was tile points, but that is not consistent either. I came here looking for the “rules”. I am currently on a level asking for 5 and 6 letter words. Here are two words not given credit for “spree” and “lambs” but snort is accepted.
    Am I missing something?

    Bento is accepted as a 6 letter word. Fyi
    Rope, coon and ring are accepted as 5 letter words.

    the word length is dependent on vines and crowns
    vines do not add to a word's length ... a four letter word with a tile that has a vine is considered a 3 letter word
    crowns add to a word's length ... a four letter word with a tile that has a crown is considered a 5 letter word
    blasted crowns add to a word's length and most blasted crowns are returned to the board

    it is a good idea to review Herb's hints every so often(i.e. one a month)

    words accepted by AB are out of our control ... as Herb mentions the tiles turn green when AB finds that word acceptable
