I will be honest, I don't use boosters so they pile up. But if I hadn't had them or gold, I wouldn't have completed either.

My daughter threw gold at her last level because she wasn't losing after wasting days on it and she had a day off so she could use them (hopefully she did)

She liked the event but it was hard and impossible without boosters.

She won't join us here so I am giving her feedback lol.

Thank you @PummyRaj. Here's my screenshot showing that I'm well and truly stuck on Level 12 and with only one star on the previous two levels.

I have been working on @Lady_Choo's method of just shovels for a while now, I have the middle companions, still miss the very first ones.

I did feel this challenge had been improved in as far as achieving the end goal.

There were more moves for a start, and with constant playing many levels could be completed without the use of any other boosters other than shovels. However, the last few levels did need other boosters/gold.
