Tiffi wakes up one morning and looks out the window. It looks like the weather is beginning to change. The leaves on the trees have lost their green color and now have the most brilliant red, orange and yellow colors. Come to think of it, Tiffi hasn’t been paying much attention to the time of year. The days are starting to get shorter too.

Tiffi looks at the calendar on the wall.

“September, when did that happen?” Tiffi thinks to herself. “And next month is October and Halloween. Before we know it the year will be over and we’ll be celebrating the new year. How can we slow these seasons down?”

Tiffi goes on to her computer to read all about Autumn.

Trees prepare for winter - One of the most stunning signs of autumn is the turning of the leaves. The shorter days are a sign to trees to begin to prepare for winter. During winter there is not enough light for photosynthesis to occur, so as the days shorten throughout autumn, the trees begin to close down their food production systems and reduce the amount of chlorophyll in their leaves.

The days get shorter - The word equinox comes from the Latin equi (meaning equal) and nox (meaning night) accounting for the equinox marking the time when day and night are of equal length. We often notice the nights begin to draw in from this point as after the autumn equinox, the nights are longer than the days, until this is reversed at the spring equinox.

Now that she thinks about it, she realizes that the days are getting shorter. It’s getting dark earlier than it was a couple of weeks ago. She continues reading.

Let’s continue - Tiffi finds articles on autumn
