When you reach a new ranking level you normally get credited with 5 hew lives.
But if you already have 3 remaining lives you only gain 2 extra as 5 is the maximum.
Recommend the lives be added to give you 8 lives or whatever number of lives you have.
It takes you many games to achieve these rankings so it's an incentive to get higher in the rankings.
