Over the last week I've virtually stopped receiving lives from friends only requests. I had a fairly active group of friends and we exchanged lives frequently but that hasn't been the case recently. Maybe I'll take a break until this is resolved.

Hello @Kdub82 you aren't the only person to have stopped receiving lives and there is a thread dedicated to this issue in the Support area of this forum.

The issue has been caused by a new life limit that means that some people are only allowed to receive three lives a day.

Some people have reported that their gsme is now back to normal, so try restarting your game to see if that helps you at all.
