So I get the challenge, run though a session, and then I get the next message?
Did I not pass the right type of hard level or something?

@Doondie Level shown is not relevant, I play a session, start to finish, completing, in this case, everything up until level 3050 at which point I collect my gold bars from the race and move on for the day. I get the next dialog when I log in the next day.

You can challenge your friends to complete hard levels. Once accepted, they have 24 hours to fulfil the requirement. If they do, they get a free, and if they don't, then you get the freebie. Likewise, your friends can independently challenge you too.
It appears you've challenged each other. He's won his challenge first. Now it's your turn to do so within the 24-hour window or you will fail. You gotta do a hard level, and 3050 isn't marked as hard. Hope this helps.
