I remember Candy Crush not being this complicated. You have all these wins and gold bars, but end up spending it all on less than 5 games. It was never like this.

Candy Crush has changed hugely over the past two years. To answer your question, it is to make money for King. Complicated algorithms that let players win and get on a win streak and then block them trying to get them to pay. The events are all largely illusionary and controlled by King. You have to be good at reading algorithms and patterns and computing if you want to succeed in Candy Crush now. If this game is not for you, I mean if you don't think it's fun, then it's time to find a different game.
