The boxes with numbers are order locks. The boxes show what it is you have to collect. So if there are toffee swirls in the box, each time you hit a toffee the count will reduce by one. Or if there are green candies inside the box, each green candy you crush will make the count go down by one. Once the count reaches zero the box will unlock and whatever is inside will be released. It is usually something needed to pass the level.
