Striped Candies - understanding how they drop on certain levels

I'm certain there is a previous post discussing this issue but searched and can't find anything. I have the worst time trying to figure out the logic behind the "dropping" striped candies. You'd think every time you clear an item in that column they would drop but they don't always. Also, trying to figure out how the game determines which way the dropped candy will face (horizontal vs vertical). I'm been going back to old levels trying to gather an understanding but I'm as confused as ever. Does anyone else have some insight into their observations? Thanks.

This is determined by the programming of each particular level. It can be once every move (rarely), once every two moves, once every three moves, etc. Once every three moves is the most common setup. Whether the stripe is horizontal or vertical, is down to luck.
