do I have to have the most purple candies and beyond the leaderboard at the top or just at the top of the leaderboard to go to the next round in the finals?

Yes. You have to be in first place in the last three finals

You have to be on top of the leaderboard - in 1st place to be specific, only when you collect most number of Purple candies.
