how do I ask a friend to help me on a level

There is no way you can ask for help within the game. The Help Friends feature does not allow a player to request help. I know this is very confusing for players who themselves help others. But it is a test feature and it is NOT reciprocal. You can only help but not ask for help!
You can't ask a friend to help you with a level @yels as the Help A Friend feature just provides you with boosters for you to complete the level you are stuck on. That is, when you ask a friend to help they have to complete a Hard level of their own in order to send you boosters. You still have to play the level yourself.
