The game will only award us the episode race gold if we are connected to the app store/King's server at the time we pass the post or before starting the next episode. One recommendation I might make is to make sure you are connected to the app store before you play the final level of each episode. The best way to do this is to close the app before you play the final level. Check your internet connection, then reopen the app. If you can see others players cards and send lives to your friends then you should be connected to King's servers and you ought to get the gold for the episode race. What does your flag look like? Mine looks like this when I am between episode races:

If your flag is like in the last image you need to close the app and reload it until you get a number or exclamation mark in the corner. If you see an exclamation mark on the flag try to tap on the flag itself and you might get the reward that way. If none of this helps contact Player Support.
I won like 4 of the race bonus on a row but the last one didn’t seem to pay the 40 coins. Can you look T my log and see if it paid the 40 coins? It was level 5437 I stopped playing when I noticed my coins didn’t go up
