I'm also wondering about the criteria for making a horizontal ray. The Guide claims 6-8 balls linked together but sometimes it's a horizontal ray while most other times, I get a vertical ray. How do I keep making horizontal rays only?

No! You make sure link 6-8 charms to create one by one type ray charms. When you start create is vertical ray charm, then horizontal ray charm, and then vertical ray charm, and then horizontal charm...
