I connected the letters e-qu-"blank"-p and the word wasn't recognized. Just in case if it matters, I was on level 61 when this happened.

I know I've made the combination e-q-u-i-p before but not in the same way you have. Will keep a look our for that combination and try it if it does come up. I only play on Facebook personally, could be an issue on mobile platform.
