How to access gold bars.  Line says I have 4 but I don't know how to access OR what they are used for

The amount of gold bars you have is displayed in the top center of the board, you should see it there whilst on the roadmap and when playing a level.

Gold bars can be used for getting extra moves, extra lives and other bits and bobs, but you can play the game without using them to make it a bit more of a challenge!
