What are the numbers for?

The characters from the library have a number in the lower right area of their selection for game play. So far I have only seen a 1 or a 2.  What are these numbers for?

This should correspond with the number that is shown under the trophy for this Character. If you have the 2nd gem ability then this will match with this number.
