How do you level up the artifacts (mouse helpers)?

I have been stuck on level 2 of most of the artifacts and although I'm obviously making stars for passing levels they do not appear to be increasing.  Do I have to redo lower kevels to increase the stars to those particular artifacts and if so, how do i know which levels I have to improve on to bring those spefically up to ii  and iii?

I suggest you check YouTube as the videos shows how the levels can be played.

Many times there are also some great advice in the comments section.
