You don't spend gold directly on the event: It registers automatically if we spend any gold and will count any gold spent in the game towards the reward. So if you get a reward for this it's a free bonus.

I just noticed that you are above level 18,500. This means that you are getting into the level range where King are actively forcing players to either spend money to keep going or quit. The game has changed a lot in since September. Anything I wrote prior to that may be out of date. Before September the first 200 levels were a lot easier than they are right now. However the last two thousand levels of Candy Crush are always definitely by far the hardest.
