Chewy tells his father that the town is having a scarecrow contest and he would like the two of them to enter the contest as a team. Arthur is thrilled that his son wants to do this him. He is so happy to have found his son. He feels bad that his wife is not around to enjoy this too. But he knows that she is looking down at both of them and smiling.
“Dad let’s get an idea of the type of scarecrow that we should create,” says Chewy. “What do you think of this one Dad? Oh wait, here is another one that I really like.”
Arthur can see that his son is going to have a hard time choosing. He tells Chewy that he’s heading out to the store to get some food. Chewy says that he’ll keep looking online to see what they have to say about scarecrows.
‘During the Middle Ages in Britain and Europe, small children worked as crow-scarers. Their job was to run around in the fields, clapping blocks of wood together, to frighten away birds that might eat the grain. As the medieval period wound down and populations decreased due to plague, farmers discovered there was a shortage of spare children to scamper around shooing birds away. Instead, they stuffed old clothes with straw, placed a turnip or gourd up on top, and mounted the figure in the fields. They soon found that these lifelike guardians did a pretty good job of keeping crows away.’ (Info here)
Chewy is so proud of himself that his stand-up comedy has put him into the finals contest. He has to check online for some new jokes.
