When the gnome finishes reading to the little gnomes Tiffi introduces herself.
“Who are you and what are you doing here? How did you get here?”
“Wow girl, slow down,” says the gnome. “That’s a lot of questions for a little guy like me. I am a gnome and these are my little gnomes. I was just telling them some stories about other little people similar to them. Are you interested in learning some facts about us gnomes?”
Tiffi sits down on the ground and she’s ready to learn more.
‘Gnomes are very widespread species, known to a number of human races. Believed to originate from Scandinavia, Gnomes later migrated to the lowlands some 1500 years ago. A gnome is a diminutive spirit in Renaissance magic and often in alchemy, living underground. They are often mentioned as one of the four spirits of the four elements, making them: salamander=fire, gnome=earth, undine=water and silph=air. They dwell underground an die there as well. Ancient and dark, they often wear monk robes. They are usually small and humpbacked, but may become giants.
Gnomes consist of a number of different types.
• The Forest Gnome who rarely comes into contact with man.
• The Garden Gnome lives in old gardens and enjoys telling melancoly tales.
• Dune Gnomes are slightly larger than their woodland breathren and choose remarkably drab clothing.
• House Gnomes have the most knowledge of man, often speaking his language. It is from this family that Gnome Kings are chosen.
• Farm Gnomes resemble their House brethen, but are more conservative in manner and dress.
• Siberian Gnomes have been more interbred than other Gnomes and associate freely with trolls . They are much larger than the other types and have an infinately more nasty nature. It is best never to evoke the ire of such Gnomes for they delight in revenge.
Gnomes tend to live in hilly meadows and rocky woodlands. In Huygen's book, it says they live in three trees, the house itself, with a hidden entrance from another tree, and then a third is the supply room, with grains, beans, potatoes and everything else the gnomes may need during the winter.’ (Source)
Wow, Tiffi is quite surprised to learn about gnomes. She would love to ask him a bunch of questions. He really has no idea what Tiffi is all about but he seems to have a lot of patience. Then he shows her a picture of a garden gnome.
“I have seen those garden gnomes outside of people’s houses,” Tiffi says. “But never knew the name for them.”
