Hi @mickb thanks again for providing the info. Since your iPad is on the latest iOS and from the info I've gathered from the web, it seems like this system is more stable compared to the previous iOS though there may be some issues with battery life, wifi connectivity and third party apps among others. I've reported your issue and please be patient and I will let you know once I have the answer. Thank you for waiting.
Meanwhile, you may want to play the game via Win10/King.com (via PC) or mobile, if you have any of these devices. Just make sure you sign in with the correct account to ensure your progress is correct.

So your iPad is from 2013 and I'm afraid it sounds like it is no longer able to handle the game seeing as the graphics effects that you get when winning a level or accepting rewards are too much for the device to handle.
This is something the game teams are aware of and they are working on improving the graphics so that this doesn't happen all the time on older devices. But eventually, the device will most likely not be able to handle the games with future updates.
Have you spoken to Apple Support to see if they have any other suggestions?
Hope you are still able to enjoy playing Friends on a different device and keep an eye on future updates to see if it helps improve the game 😉
