Best tips for playing Candy Crush

I created this thread to share some tips from my experience and tests. The game keeps changing, so many of the original tips no longer apply.

This is my update for November 2025:

Candy Crush is all about budgeting gold bars now.

The hardest levels are impossible to pass in the moves allocated, so you will need gold to get past them. To budget gold make sure you never have less than the 50 gold in your account. With 50 gold you should be able to win the episode races to win more gold (unless you are near the end of the map, then you might need more). Some tips on how to budget your gold here:

I have noted that this thread comes up quite early for anyone looking for help on Google, so I have updated it. It may well be that most people now go to search engines or AI to find help, rather than directly to this confusing King site.

Hi @christinewupp ! Thank you for your tips. Since the expensive Music Tournament I'm spending less and less money on Candy Crush. Certainly so since the prices are rising to ridicuous amounts. 3 Hammers for 29 gold bars, for instance. I'm even thinking to close my accounts on pc and mobile for good, I've really had it with King.But with your tips my fun in the game might increase again, so I'll hang on for the time being.

I feel I need to update this thread:

Please note that there is no longer a guarantee to win the episode race if you complete the levels in 24 hours. It is mostly now the same day, so try to finish the episode before midnight, but I have also been tricked once and lost it in several hours. The only sure way to win the episode race is to play the entire race without closing the game.

I have posted this elsewhere, but lately I have found that levels are quite predictable and most conform to the same rules.

If the board is set to "fail" mode there is no cheap way to outtrick it, so personally I don't bother trying and replay until I find I either get lucky or I decide to pay gold to pass by it.

If the board is set to "lucky" you are given a chance to pass if you make the right moves. I find it more and more predictable to recognise a lucky board now and these tend to be the right moves to pass them:

Make the first move the game suggests
During the first 2 thirds of the level make every special candy you can create and try to create combos of special candies. If you get such a combo strike it.
During the last 3rd of the level pause and think. Try to work out if there is a way to pass with your remaining moves. If the game has given you some luck at the beginning there is a good chance it will now help you if you make the right moves. In the last 2 or 3 moves you might see that the game will leave you just short. This might be a good moment to use that lollipop hammer or UFO you got from events because it is probably as close as the game will let you get

Another general tip is to check on your opening board if there are any spawners, such as fish spawners or wrap/stripe spawners. These usually give an indication of what mechanism is written into the board to pass. For example if there are both fish and wrapped candy spawners then chances are that a wrap/fish combo will help you pass this particular level. If there are wrap and stripe spawners then creating wrap/stripe combos will help win such a level.

As it's back up on the first page, let me add some more of my tips.

Take best advantage of events in your game.

Candy Crush has now become an event based game and we all get a different selection, often with differing prizes. A crafty player will know how their events work and what the prizes are in order to take best advantage of their personal selection. For example if you are due a timed booster from the chocolate box, daily win or weekly race wait to log in or to finish the level that will unlock the timed booster until you have time to play for the entire duration of the timed booster.

* You can fill the first chocolate box easily by playing old levels and then play new levels when you have the timed boosters from the chocolate box. If you get timed boosters from other events, such as a timed UFO from the daily win, these DO count towards the chocolate box, so you can use timed UFOs to complete your gold box and earn the gold, if you get the timing right.

*Edit Oct2025: Chocolate box has changed and can no longer be used for old levels.

Do you get offers for passing levels after you have failed repeatedly? I get a fishing boat and one extra life when I have used up my five lives, and now always also get added timed boosters with it. Sometimes I choose to wait to play gold or boosters to pass a legendary level until I get this offer, because the timed boosters are not just of use for my next try, but will help me finish the remainder of the episode and win the race. Offers like this can be anticipated and used effectively. A lot of levels will be easy to pass with timed starting boosters.

Then there are other events not worth bothering with: Candy Royale? Don't get tricked into spending more gold than you would gain just to keep that win streak. If you fail Candy Royale it will pop up again before long to give you another chance. If you keep winning though you will see less and less of it.

Make sure you have good internet connections to take advantage of events. The episode race won't start while you are offine. Check you are online when starting the first level of a new episode. If you play the first few levels without internet you will miss out on the episode race. Don't start the race unless you think you can finish it in the same day. Ignore the other players, they are not real. Every player can win every episode race. Make sure you have internet connection again for that last level to claim the gold.

Always play Season Pass to the end. It can be played offline and by replaying easy old levels. So every player can get to the end every week. (Don't waste gold to pay to move onto the next tier. Be careful not to press that green button by mistake!) Edit Oct 2025: This still works!

Do you get Adverts for extra moves? If you do, don't rely on them. They come and go and the help you get changes, so it is a bit hit and miss. If you want to keep those adverts don't spend any real money on the game ever, or those ads will disappear. I only watch ads if I think they will actually help me pass the level. If in doubt I X out and retry the level instead. In my game I have found that if I don't use the ads then they will keep reappearing after each attempt, so I wait until I get close enough before I choose to watch them.

And my latest tip is: Don't play while there is no connection to the server! You will lose out on the gold from the episode races and chocolate box rewards. If your game is not connected then wait until the issue gets resolved. How do you know if you are connected? Go into your profile and click on any of the boosters. If you get this then you have lost your connection,

so don't bother playing and close the app.

There were some levels with licorice or light gray square ones (I don’t know their names 🤣). If they are kind of dropping down, even if there are more moves to spare, if I could use a hammer to end the game I would. I got stuck several times when those candies filled the jelly and as they were on a column they would keep filling in. In those cases, I swapped them with a jelly nearby if I could then use a hammer.
Someone probably mentioned this before but another thing I noticed is you can’t use a hammer to hit a jelly with a frog on it. So, if you have a double jelly and a ready-to-jump frog, it’s better to place the frog next to that jelly then use a hammer to finish it.

I'll add another of my tips here:

Don't fall for the tricks the game plays! Always be aware that candies do NOT drop at random near the end of a tricky level. King's algorithms decide if you get a chance to pass or fail. This early level is a prime example to illustrate:

Level 35, which looks like this:

By this time as a new player I have 50 gold bars and been given some lollipop hammers and fishes. On my first attempt the game gives me an easy board if I follow the hints and I am almost there with 10 moves left:

So I have ten moves to line up two more green candies to make the winning match here. So you think it is happening? Or maybe that I get the chance to get a colour bomb? So few colours, such an easy board. But think again…

They wanted me to use one of my lollipops or 10 of my precious gold.

The same trick the game plays again and again, often on our first attempt. The only difference being that on level 35 of course I passed easily on my second attempt. If you are at a level in the thousands, especially if it's a legendary or nightmarish level, then DO use that lollipop if you are in this position, as it may be many many attempts before the game lets you pass.

And here my tips for absolute beginners:

*On levels 0 to 200 don't spend any of the gold the game gives you and save up all your boosters as well. If you fail a level, try again and it may get easy to pass on your second or subsequent attempt. Understand that the candies don't fall randomly but are controlled by the game mechanics and at each attempt it is different. So if the game leaves you one candy short, next time it may let you pass. Don't pay gold or use lollipops to beat levels 0-200! Be patient and wait for the lucky board, which will come eventually. From level 200-300 there will be levels where you will need boosters or gold to pass, so keep them safe for those "horrible 200s".

*Edit Oct 2025: The early levels have been made harder, so you might have to spend gold before level 200 unless you are really patient and prepared to play slowly for the first few days. Level 114 for example cannot be passed in the five lives you have at the moment (you will get lucky after about 7 or 8 attempts) so if you are down to your last life you might want to pay gold to get past this, but never spend more than 10 bars per level and always keep more than 50 in your account.

You can win gold in the episode races. Ignore the other players as they are just recordings picked by King. The event has a timer and mostly if you finish an episode the same day you started it you will win.

Another tip is this:

It's not just about HOW to play but about WHEN to play. These past two weeks have been great: Good events, easy boards (in the lower ranges at least). When the going is good like this use the events to gather boosters for use later and make sure you win every episode race to win gold.

When the going gets tough: pause playing. The going gets tough during events like All Stars and major leaderboard competitions. If you find you are being held up and you are getting frustrated then stop playing new levels for a while. If you find you spend more gold than you are making, it's time for a pause.

My best tips in addition to those stated are:

Don't hold on to a win streak at all cost. It can be costly if you are nowhere near and chances are on your second attempt you will get an easier board. Don't pay more than 10 gold for extra moves, so if you can't definitely pass with 5 more moves wait until the game offers you enough extra moves for your 10 gold. If you do, you will get your win streak back soon enough as the next levels are likely to be easy.
legendary levels: Play starting boosters on your first attempt only. If the game won't let you pass with these then you will be held up for a long time, so don't waste any more boosters until you find you get close. Watch out for any sign of a lucky board: dropping the right candies to make the matches you need to make, then take advantage of every opportunity the game gives you. If no opportunities show up, you might as well quit and try again, don't waste your boosters on these levels!
Use events in the game to collect boosters. Then use your boosters wisely: your UFOs and lollipops are best kept to use before your last turn in a tricky level, use them only when you can see you can definitely pass if you play it. Hand switches are great to bring two colour bombs side by side on a starting board (e.g. in legendary levels when you are on a win streak and play starting boosters)
