I've read the event description above and done the competition multiple times, so I know what it is about in general terms. However, I still have a couple of questions.
Before that, I'd like to point out the 2 major differences - grand reward is now 500 gold bars (which is still almost nothing when shared with 20+ other people) and cooldown is over 3 days (~86 hours).
Now, here are my questions:
1. Why don't we get the reward in 24 hours or after last participant is done, whatever comes first?
2. Does it matter whether I do those 7 levels as quickly as possible or should I take my time?
3. Does it matter when you start/join the competition?
I find it very suspicious that I can start the competition whenever I please, as long as it's off cooldown, and there are always 99 other people on standby waiting to join. 🤔
Another thing is the immediate reward distribution. Like, how on Earth could everyone else be done by the time I'm done, especially when I start right away? I'm beginning to think there is no competition whatsoever but a bunch of bots "playing" with me and an algorithm deciding how many of them "succeed".
How many of these 21 other people were real and/or really took part in this competition, and their avatars weren't just borrowed for illustration purposes only?
4. Could anyone else except @aleks779 who managed to genuinely get the grand prize share when they joined the competition - at the start of an episode, middle or end?

Grand prize might be 500 gold bars @Doondie but you only needed to complete 5 levels previously. I don't think I have won one Royale since the move to the 7 level requirement.
I obviously can't answer your questions with any authority, but I would say the answer to Question 2 is that it doesn't matter how quickly you complete the levels. I say this because you can start a Royale and then play previous levels and it doesn't seem to affect your progress in the Royale.
It really isn't a surprise that there are 99 people at the same level as you when you consider there are over 200 million players.
Like you though I am struggling with the mechanics of the game. When I complete a level and the feature shows me how many are left in the Royale have those players played at the same time as me? I doubt it.
Personally I think that the Royale is just another Episode Race. By that I mean that similar to the Episode Race the Royale isn't a live comparison. I think the feature just finds 99 players that completed the level you have just played or are about to play and then it compares their progress to yours.
The only unknown is whether or not when choosing the 99 players the feature 'knows' how many completed the seven levels when it chooses them.

@aleks779, I'm now sure it's not possible for me to start Royale from 9th level. I've tried postponing the start while doing the first 8 levels (it goes on another 20-min. cooldown when I clear 1st level, btw), as well as doing them in advance while Royale is still on cooldown and wait for it but it simply refuses to start until I reach 10th level. I've tried restarting the game and doing an older level first but nothing helps - the Royale just won't pop until 10th level or earlier (1st - 8th included). 9th level appears to be bugged.

It indeed seems to be the same as Episode Race but:
- instead of 4, it finds 99 other people's records;
- instead of 15, it takes only 7 levels into consideration;
- there could be multiple winners as long as they didn't lose their winning streak, therefore clearing speed is irrelevant.
So yeah, it raises the question whether the 99 recordings were totally randomly selected or the algorithm already knew how many qualified for the reward.
I wasn't aware the initial amount of levels was 5. This would've made it even harder to get a remotely decent reward, considering the low grand prize.
