Bright and early in the morning Misty is taking a stroll through the park when she sees a little boy and his mother looking at a story book and talking.
“Mommy can you tell me more about the sun?” asks the little boy. “Why is the sun yellow.?”
“Let’s continue reading to find out why,” says the mother.
‘The real color of the sun is white. The reason that the Sun looks yellow to us is because the Earth's atmosphere scatters higher wavelength colors, like red, orange and yellow less easily. Hence, these wavelengths are what we see, which is why the Sun appears yellow.
Sunlight is made up of a mixture of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet and indigo. These colours are the same as that of a rainbow. A prism can be used to see all the colours of the sun. When light passes through a prism, it bends. Each colour can be seen at a different angle. Violet bends the most, while red bends the least.’ (Source)
“Why would it be all those colors when I only see yellow?” asks the little boy. “And what’s a prism?”
The mother continues reading the book to her son.
‘We assume sunlight to be white in colour,” says the mother. “This is because when all the colours are mixed up, it looks white.”
“But why?” asks the little boy.
Misty can see that the mother is really struggling to answer her son. She goes over to them and introduces herself.
“Hi there, I hope that you don’t mind me interrupting your conversation,” says Misty. “My name is Misty and maybe I can help you with your son’s questions. I love to Google search so maybe I can offer some simple explanations to him.”
The mother looks up at Misty with such a frustrated look on her face.
“Oh that would be wonderful,” says the mother. “My name is Claire and this is my son Adam. He’s been asking me so many why questions lately and I don’t know how to answer.”
Misty is going to try her best to help her with the why questions.
