Olivia explains the colors of the sky

Early in the afternoon Olivia is passing by Mr. Toffee’s store when she sees a mother and little boy outside. The little boy has been asking a lot of why questions and out of frustration the mother tries to distract him by promising to buy him some candy if he behaves.

The little boy nods his head in agreement and they both go inside the store. Olivia is trying to decide whether to go inside to say hello to Mr. Toffee or just go on home. Just as she’s about to open the front door the mother and little boy walk out. He is satisfied with the candy but he’s still not done with his questions.

“Mommy why is the sky blue?” the little boy asks.

How many times are you going to ask me the same why questions?” says the mother. “Because I said so, that’s why!”

Oh this poor mother just lost her patience with her little boy. She is not aware of the why stage and why he asks those questions. Olivia goes over to introduce herself.

“Hi, my name is Olivia,” she says. “I don’t mean to interrupt you but I see that you are struggling with your son’s why questions. Would you like me to offer some help?”

The mother introduces herself to Olivia.

“Oh hi, my name is Ashley and this is my son Andrew,” says the mother. “He’s my first-born child and I’m struggling with his why questions. It’s never ending! I just don’t know how to answer him anymore.”

“Children are curious about everything,” says Olivia. “One of the most asked questions by children is the why questions.  It’s just a phase they are going through as they grow and learn. If he asks a lot of questions he might be a gifted-child so let me help you a bit.”

Olivia walks over to Andrew and tells him that she can tell him why the sky is blue. His face lights up and he just sits down waiting for an answer.
