@Marilyn-3 That's a completely valid complaint (the same one I originally had too), and I hope @Crazy Cat Lad is taking note for something to be done about it. Indeed, it's a chore to go backward on the map to send lives to older friends, and since their current level can be a random # from your own, it makes it hard to guess how far back on the map to scroll to make use of the "Send lives" button.
Of course, if a down arrow was added which takes players all the way back to level 1, that would be a simple solution (apart from consolidating the new Friends list)... 👀

Deryck, as of this morning, 1.26.22, all my old friends are gone from previous levels. Was able to send them lives by going to previous levels and finding them there, but this morning, they are all gone. They're also gone from the map. Every one of them. Very sad day.

I think by the look of things we are all in the same boat. Been playing for years and i think its time to give up.

@Marilyn-3 I had wondered why a bunch of my friends suddenly randomly disappeared off the map and when opening previous levels. I can confirm being affected by this too.
@Crazy Cat Lad This is absolute nonsense that the longtime players in my game were removed without warning. Since I didn't know them personally, there's no way to send them an invite either using the new friends feature.
Reinstate our old friends!

The entire time I have been playing this game (many years) there have been 80+ competitors in my group--none of them friends. One of the ways I keep things interesting is by aiming to be in the top 10 (or top 50%, if there are less than 20 who have advanced to that level yet) of each level. Now, today, all of those people are gone. All that remain are the two people I selected as friends. How can I bring the larger group back?

If your game is disconnected from the server, you will not be able to find friends in your game, also your friends list may be missing for a few more reasons. However you can try to find the solution by following few simple steps below.
Cheak app update - Log out game - Restart device - Open game and Log in.

Hello @ChrisPortlamd your issue is unfixable as the lack of 'friends' in the leader boards of the levels you play is a result of the new Candy Connections feature that has been rolled out recently. You can read about the newish feature in the discussion linked below
You can try to get some of your old friends by adding them to your game again using the new feature. I found that all the names I used to see in my levels disappeared to be replaced by those people I had accepted friends invites from. When I checked the 'add more friends' section of the new feature I noticed the names of the people I used to see, so I sent a friends request to them.

Impossible to clear this Level 11098 within 22 moves. Where as in you tube demo shows 35 moves. I struggled a lot and wasted boosters in this Level 11098.. Request to verify and consider..

I have not received free gold bars when I completed the Milestone of Level 11000.. Please request you to favour and will be great useful for this type of difficult Levels when I am playing.
