This problem isn't new. Same thing was happening during last leaderboard event.
Do you happen to play on more than one account? If so, I'd advise you to refrain from switching accounts until the event is over.
In case you're using the browser version, you should try the standalone Windows version instead.
Anyway, try this as troubleshooting:
- Log out, restart the game, then log back in;
- Do any older level - 6000 or easier;
- Restart the game and do the lower level again.
Hopefully, the event pop-up will appear for you, and then the event itself.
