There is a potential workaround that you can try that will allow you to use other apps in the background.
If you're planning on listening to Spotify while playing and the music stops as soon as open the game app, try this:
Go to Settings from the game board and select Audio:
Now, try moving the music volume slider up and then back down to zero (effectively muting it), and then go back to Spotify and select Play and then back to the game and see if the issue persists.
Hope this makes sense 😁 I just tried it and it worked for me but, you do have to repeat this process when you close the game app and open it again.

Still not working!!! I’m going to find another game — not a King game — and I bet a lot of other people are too. Did you get rid of the people who know what they're doing? If so, get them back!

Yes, it works for a little while. But as soon as you watch an ad, you have to go through the whole rigamarole again. I guess King doesn’t care if players watch ads or not. Are any of you “support” guys even paying attention to this? Feel free to chime in.

Except for Community Managers, all others that help out here are players like you. Comment just above to your comment is posted by our Community In-charge. They would have more accurate information with regards to fix on the glitches because, they are the King employees!
So, the "Support" guys (Player Support team) will also have the same answer as our Community In-charge as they too are King employees.
The “workaround” works for a short time, but has to be repeated over and over — every time you watch an ad or even try a level again. But doesn’t it give you a clue about what has to be done? Reset the default setting to 0% instead of 1%. How can this be taking so long? It really makes the “support staff” look like fools.
I am also having the same issue. Is there any update on the fix ?
@QueenB I left this same complaint in early June and it's driving me bonkers. It's ALL the apps - NPR, Apple Music, Spotify, etc. EVERY time I play a game (has to be starting a level) it turns off the audio. This is true whether I launch candy crush first or do it after the audio app. PLEASE PRIORITIZE THIS. I did a search and this seems to be coming up more and more as a complaint. Thank you!!
Obviously they don’t care. Either they’ve given up or there’s no one smart enough to figure it out. I think there’s only one way to get their attention. Anyone up for a BOYCOTT until it’s fixed?
