Copied from a website, but the ties to ancient Sumerian legend have always fascinated me, tbh.

The Epic of Gilgamesh arose out of the same mythological tradition, and the same time in history and geographic location, as did the vampire. The V-word hadn’t been invented yet, but mothers in ancient Mesopotamia were warning their children about the Lilitu, a bloodsucking, bird-like demon that came in the night to prey on the living, at roughly the same time that Adam and Eve were supposed to be cavorting in the nearby Garden of Eden. The vampire has been with us since the first written stories were being scrawled into the first clay tablets, and likely long before that.
